เมืองเดินได้ของคุณเป็นอย่างไร?

บทสัมภาษณ์ผู้คนริมทางเท้าตามแนวคลองผดุงกรุงเกษมนำไปสู่ การตั้งคำถามและการจัดกิจกรรมเชิงบูรณาการการเรียนรู้เรื่องเมืองกับผู้ที่ใช้งานพื้นที่ในชีวิตประจำวัน ซึ่งเป็นจุดเริ่มของความคิดในการสร้างสรรค์ ผลงานออกแบบที่สามารถเปลี่ยนให้ฟุตบาทเป็นได้มากกว่าแค่ทางเท้าให้คนเดินผ่าน แต่สามารถสร้างประโยชน์เชิงสังคม และส่งเสริมการออกแบบเมืองอย่างมีส่วนร่วม (participatory planning) ในขณะที่งานวิจัยเรื่องความเดินได้ของเมืองมักถูกจำกัดด้วยการศึกษาเชิงสถิติในโลกวิชาการ หรือถูกตรีตราว่าเป็นแขนงการศึกษาวิจัยที่เป็นนามธรรมและเข้าใจยาก การเดินได้ของเมือง (urban walkability) นั้นยังคงเป็นสิ่งสำคัญต่อการพัฒนาเมืองอย่างสร้างสรรค์และยั่งยืน โดยเฉพาะในโลกปัจจุบันที่ชีวิตในเมืองเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็ว และในยุคของสังคมผู้สูงอายุ สิ่งสำคัญของนักออกแบบและวิจัยด้านเมืองยังคงสะท้อนกลับมาถึงแง่มุมเล็ก ๆ ของชีวิตคนเมืองอย่างการเดินเท้า

ศูนย์วิจัยชุมชนเมือง (Urban Studies Lab: USL) ได้จัดกิจกรรมออกแบบฝาท่อร่วมกับน้อง ๆ นักเรียนจากโรงเรียนบำรุงอิสลามวิทยาและมูลนิธิ The Hub สายเด็ก ในหัวข้อ “คลองของฉัน เมืองในฝัน” ซึ่งได้รับการสนับสนุนกิจกรรมจากกรุงเทพมหานคร เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการพัฒนาภูมิทัศน์ทางเท้าในพื้นที่ริมคลองผดุงกรุงเกษม เพื่อสร้างพื้นที่เชิงสังคมในย่านนางเลิ้ง และสนับสนุนการพัฒนาเมืองอย่างสร้างสรรค์ และได้ส่งต่อภาพวาดฝีมือของน้อง ๆ ไปยังนักออกแบบกลุ่มเมืองยิ้ม จนออกมาเป็นฝาท่อที่ส่งเสริมและสนับสนุนการออกแบบ วางแผน และพัฒนาเมืองที่ตระหนักถึงผู้คนและความหลากหลายในเชิงค่านิยมและความคิด ผ่านการออกแบบฝาท่อที่สร้างเรื่องราวและมอบสีสันให้กับการเดินเท้าในเมือง

USL และกลุ่มเมืองยิ้มชื่อว่าฝาท่อเป็นได้มากกว่าเพียงสิ่งปิดท่อระบายน้ำ แต่ยังสามารถสร้างสีสันและประโยชน์ในเมืองในการสนับสนุนกับพัฒนาเมืองอย่างมีส่วนร่วม และการออกแบบเมืองอย่างสร้างสรรค์และมีส่วนร่วม ทั้งนี้ การพานักเรียนและน้อง ๆในชุมชนกลับไปเดินชมและทำกิจกรรมในพื้นที่โครงการยังช่วยเสริมสร้างความผูกพันธ์และความภูมิใจกับพื้นที่ซึ่งนำไปสู่การพัฒนาเมืองอย่างสร้างสรรค์ในระยะยาวอีกด้วย

What’s the ideal image of your walkable city?

Remarked participants on street interview during the initial site visit of the designer team which led to the question on improving walkability through community engagement and participatory planning. While the notion of walkability in itself is argued among academia as abstract and elusive, the ability to walk down the street safely and comfortably remains the pedestrian’s fundamental rights and thus the responsibility of planners and urban designers - especially with the contemporary fast-paced civic life and the rising trend of aging society. What lies beyond the go-to statistical data study of “how walkable is this street?” are the urban sociological fabric and the social impacts the walking condition has on the underlying civic life in the area.

Through the “My Canal, Our Dream City'' drawing workshops with local school students at the Bamrung Islam Witthaya School and the Childline Thailand Foundation in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Urban Studies Lab collaborated with three emerging designers from the MueangYim group (TH: กลุ่มเมืองยิ้ม, lit: the smiling city group) on creating the the alternative and thought-provoking Bangkok’s manhole cover that could lead up to the public conversation on creative urban development that need not limit to the top-down policy. The design delivery intends to redefine the notion of “walking as the art of landscape’ and how Bangkok could see the creative vibrancy of a walk down the street that put a smile on their face.

USL and the MueangYim group believed that walkway is more than a space for passing by, and manhole cover could also contribute to fruitful spatial appropriation on the horizontal plane. Civic life is alive with the sociological fabric of street life at eye level. While the drawing workshop with local school students encourages the learning outside the classroom through its creative art approach, continuing works from the designers team brought life to the student’s drawing ‘lines’ they eventually contribute to the development of their hometown - instilling the courage to speak up about what they think matters in civic development. Furthermore, a site revisit with students also contributes to creating the urban classroom, encouraging participatory planning for creative urban development while enhancing the sense of belonging in the area. Gradually, people make the Land of Smile - just one step at a time.
