บทความโดยนักวิจัยคนใหม่ของ USL Jirapatr Jitwattanasilp ม้านั่งสาธารณะตามท้องถนนมีบทบาทอย่างมากในการสร้างความเป็นพื้นที่สาธารณะและการเดินเท้า บนทางเท้านั้นม้านั่งเพิ่มมิติการใช้พื้นที่ของทางเท้า ทั้งในด้านระยะเดิน ความเป็นพื้นที่สาธารณะในการใช้พักผ่อนหย่อนใจ ม้านั่งสาธารณะยังเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของพื้นที่สาธารณะเพียงไม่กี่สิ่งที่ที่ไม่ได้พ่วงมากับการใช้พื้นที่ในการบริโภคเป็นหลัก แต่ม้านั่งในกรุงเทพนั้นหาได้ยากเย็นยิ่งนัก มั้านั่งพบได้เพียงตามสวนสาธารณะ ป้ายรถเมล์ หรือตามพิ้นที่กึ่งสาธารณะ เช่นลานตามห้างสรรพสินค้า อาคารสูงต่างๆ ม้านั่งหลายๆที่ยังมีความไม่เป็นมิตร จำกัดวิธี หรือเวลาการใช้งานผ่าน การออกแบบ หรือกฎเกณฑ์ต่างๆ
ม้านั่งที่หายไปจากทางเท้าสะท้อนปัญหาที่ใหญ่กว่าของขนบในด้านการรับรู้ หรือแนวคิดต่างๆที่เกี่ยวกับพื้นที่สาธารณะ เหมือนว่าพวกเราในฐานะ Urbanist ได้ละเลยศักยภาพและความเป็นพื่นที่สาธารณะของทางเท้าไปอย่างไม่ตั้งใจหรือยอมจำนนต่อระบบเศรษฐกิจและสังคมในการนิยามความเป็นสาธารณะของทางเท้า ทางเท้าที่หายไปสะท้อนถึงความไม่เท่าเทียม ความไม่เป็นธรรมของการให้บริการพื้นที่สาธารณะที่แท้จริง ในนิยามของคนเมืองอาจจะละเลยกลุ่มคนรายได้ต่ำ คนชรา และเด็ก สิทธิในการเข้าถึง ใช้งานและแสดงออกในพื้นที่สาธารณะและความมีตัวตนของพวกเขาเหล่านั้น ถูกทำให้เงียบหายไปจากทางเท้า จากโครงข่ายพื้นที่สาธารณะที่ใหญ่สุดของเมือง
Street benches playing a big role in boosting publicness and walkability. They enhance the quality of the street as public space. They allow people to spend their time outside more often, longer and encourage walkability. Street benches offer a place for a citizen to represent themselves as a part of the city, the public life without needs to consume. But Benches in Bangkok only exist at a very specific spot, such as some bus stops, parks and semi-private properties. Bus stops are often designed to be quite hostile to users – they are discouraged from lingering as much as possible by the sheer discomfort of the seat.
The missing street benches portray a larger issue of Bangkok’s public space normative. It seems like us practitioners in urbanism might have overlooked the basic measure in the foundations of public life or somehow surrender to the wave and demands of the socio-economic. Bangkok city is screaming a very defensive approach in urbanism practices. The missing street benches become the measure of inequality and injustice of public space. The public life becomes alienating lower-income demography, elderly and children. Their rights are silenced to be in our publicness, in the representation of our city. Bangkok urbanism is hostile.
