When Napoleon III became the first president of France, shortly thereafter, he commissioned Georges-Eugène Haussmann to renovate Paris. Between 1853-1870, Haussmann developed major infrastructure projects for Paris, including many of the wide boulevards, formal gardens and public plazas that Paris is known for today. Apart from beautifying Paris, Haussmann’s urban designs had the intent of stopping the way people held protests in the city.
